Timeline of motoring history 1679 – 1939

1679
Practical French scientist Denis Papin invents the pressure-cooker or ‘digester’.

1690
Many before him have experimented with single charges of gunpowder as a means of moving a piston in a bore but, Denis Papin publishes his ideas for harnessing steam as an alternative, to achieve repeated cycles of movement. In doing so, he recognises the potential for a mechanical alternative to animals for mobilising carriages. He goes on to build the first steam engine, which is used to pump water to a canal running between Kassel and Karlshaven in Germany.

The Clean Closet is essentially a closet that washes clothing. Textiles are scanned for impurities and cleaned accordingly with molecular technology that removes dirt and odours. The concept replaces the laundry basket, the washing machine, and drying cabinet to save space and, as no water is used in the process, is kinder to the environment.

Synthetic and artificial fiber

Synthetic fibers are the result of extensive research by scientists to improve on naturally occurring animal and plant fibers. In general, synthetic fibers are created by forcing, usually through extrusion, fiber forming materials through holes (called spinnerets) into the air, forming a thread. Before synthetic fibers were developed, artificially manufactured fibers were made from cellulose, which comes from plants. These fibers are called cellulose fibers.

The Power of the Sun

My parents bought these solar panels. With our climate in Tuscany they’ll probably produce enough energy to go on with their house, washing machine and even warming… reflection of the sun and a tree on the panel. I like them very much, and I’m happy my parents bought them… (I’ve also suggested them to buy — I don’t have a proper roof, but they do have a garden!)
